Matka Grönlantiin, osa I (15.7.2009)

Lyhyt matkapäiväkirja risteilyltä Reykjavikista Kangerlussuaqiin, 15.7. - 25.7.2009

"Lähde huikealle risteilylle Grönlantiin. Retki kulkee Islannin Reykjavikista Grönlannin Kangerlussuaqiin tai toisinpäin tahi koko ringin nauttien. – Islannin nykyaikaa elävä, tuhannen vuotta sitten ”savuavan” vuonon rannalle syntynyt Reykjavik tulee tietysti katsastetuksi. Qaqortoq on grönlantilaisittain jo asutuskeskus, väkeä peräti 3100 henkeä! Lähetyssaarnaajien perustama Nuuk on jääsaaren pääkaupunki, Katuaq taas kulttuurikeskus, paikallisesta elämänmenosta kiinnostuneelle tosi aarreaitta.

Katseltuani hetken kannelta maisemia laskusilta johdattaa minut vapauteen.

Kaukana horisontissa kiiltävät keskustan tornitalot, heijastavat miljoonin kiloin kultaa.

Take care!

English translation....

I sit in the airport and feel surprisingly calm, I'm on my way again and thinking that will I manage to get as high as on my earlier "Kristina" cruise. But then finally when aeroplane arrives from the east above the green island of Iceland and curves over the Keflavik airport I can feel it rising again - the sensation of expectation and great feelings that are following me on my journeys, but now it is something different, because I've visited here before and I am so much waiting for that state. And the positive excitement erupts as enormous energy that overflows through my whole body at the same moment as I step outside from the airport front doors. The footsteps are long and lightweighted and here I am again!!! I inhale the sunshiny air, take a deep breath of it and my mind is expanding. Now life is sweet drug!

The route from Keflavik to Reykjavik takes 45 minutes by bus, far too long because I would just want fast leave my luggage to the ship and release my heart on the nocturnal alleys of Reykjavik… On the bus I watch the evanescent sceneries, the same ones that ended my dream two years ago. And now they would be the starting point for a new journey.. For a journey that I'm expecting so much of…

On the ship a familiar cabin is awaiting for me and I know my way again, just like in my life lately. The guidance. No. Destiny. No, not even that… Something so strange and mystic that I even don't know it by myself, but I throw myself onto it anyway, to be gone with its flow. I hasten quickly to the buffet restaurant and this time despite the hurry I eat and drink in a distinguished way sitting unaccompanied in the table... I order a bottle of fine white wine from the wine steward and enjoy the moment.

After watching the landscape from the deck for a moment, the drawbridge is leading me into freedom. The ship is now in different harbour than last time and from here it's about 3 kilometers to the city centre. At the gate I ask from the local young watchman if he can recommend some good pub or bar that is crowded on Wednesday nights.. About 20-year old guy recommends me to go to see popular Icelandic band called Lay Low that is performing tonight in a bar named Rosenberg. Only the location of the bar was kept a mystery, as the guy says that last time he visited there he was too drunk and cannot remember where it quite was. "Yeah, I know the feeling" I said with a laughter as we sang out our goodbyes and I walked outside the dock area.

I follow the walkway by the seaside towards the town and towards the golden sunset ahead of me. The sunset with its yellow light is entombing almost 1000 meter high mountains beyond the bay and the light is flooding in through all of my senses. I am being as one together with nature and the stillness, although the devastating
landscapes and this moment gets me out of breath... Joggers, rollerbladers and cyclists are coming towards me, although it is already more than 11 o'clock at night… But the sunset is so impressive and the floating photons are sweeping me like a soft evening wind, with my strides meters above from the ground and my soul on fire - like always.

The bottom of the sea is making thundering sound

Gollum -
Gollum -
Gollum -

But otherwise it's totally silent because I've even been holding my breath for several minutes… My hand is taken by an invisible hand (huldufólk) and it is giving me the creeps as I step into the flaming sun of the Viking Land.

Far in the horizon the centre's towers are glimmering, reflecting millions kilograms of gold. At the centre the huldufólk are guiding me to the small alley and straight to Café Rosenberg's door, even though I had no idea about the location of it. I reflect can I be this lucky and answer to myself with a smile, "Rock on Rudy."

The band had just quit their play and are collecting their band gear away, but I decide to still stay here and order one pint of Viking from a blonde waitress. Beside me three girls are chatting and I listen to their Elven language… Icelandic is sounding quite sexy even though some words are resembling deceivingly Finnish language. J.R.R. Tolkien couldn't be wrong on this.

At the bar desk I get acquainted with some local guy who is absolutely fabulous. From changing a few words We get along very well and end up discussing the whole night and spending pints together. Now it is easy for me too, as the economic breakdown of Iceland has taken the half of the value of the currency, the pint costs anymore only 5 euros, as couple years ago it was worth of ten euros. We talk about the world, girls, life, and everything we can. I offer him "fishshots" (here it is Fisk like in Denmark) and he tells me he is working as a chef in some popular restaurant. He asks me to come for a lunch there tomorrow and he will offer me back some interesting drinks…

Bar is closing at one o'clock and according to him all the other places are going to be closed as well at the same time here. During the weekends there's different party and then bars and clubs are open until morning and only Icelandish sky is the limit if even that. The feast of Valhalla. He tells that I must come back during some weekend to have a party time and see it all. Reykjavik has Europe's leading clubscene and I can already see in my eys the Long- and white-haired Valkyries' wild dance in the hot clubs… I promise to come and we exchange our contact information.

But now I don't want return back to the ship yet and lose a night like this, so I ask where I could go for an afterparty. Or where could I get just more beer… "Well that ain't a problem" says my new friend. "My sister is there behind the counter and is glad to sell you few beers to be taken with you…" My face shines with happiness and I suggest we could go together to seashore and drink beer, but he says that tomorrow's work and he has to go asleep and escort his sister safely home… "Well, ok, I think I can find some party somewhere" I add with a smile and buy from the sister three big Tuborg bottles and start to stride off towards the seashore, after I have waved them goodbye for this night… Take care!

I arrive to the waterfront and there's other people too sitting on the rocks by the shimmering light of the sun that has already gone down, and in the shadows of the rocks by the sea the bodies are intertwined and the hands are joining in hands. Slight longing makes me fall silent but I open the bottle and take a sip of Tuborg and stare the peaceful surface of the sea and sit in solitude. I sit by the Viking boat, by the caresses of the moon and squeezing the bottle at the same time enjoying and terribly longing and yearning… Even the cool of the night doesn't matter right now although I'm wearing just a T-shirt and I sit for a long time just gazing into emptiness and listening this soundless surrounding world around me, the crying loneliness and the reflecting light of it by the hungry moon.

Beside me comes some people, two young women and a man. They are sitting down and see my bottle and ask if I have an opener. I reply that I don't have and try to open their bottles against sharp edge of an rock with quite bad success. They say that they have met each other in hostel they are staying and for some of them this would be the last night in Reykjavik, like it would be for me too. The man is from Poland, the girls from Russia (Moscow) and Korea. The Korean girl says that she likes Finland very much and wants herself a photo where I am with her. Black haired girl smiles and we pose together for the camera and we laugh. We chat long time and drink beer until the morning starts approaching and we are running out of our drinks. Finally we are going separate ways and we shake hands for farewell. I leave alone and walk along the moonbeam's path toward the ship. It's almost four o'clock in the morning when I eventually climb into my bed and the wake-up for breakfast would be in less than four hours. Darkness fills my tired eyes in a moment and my first day of the journey has run out.

And my dream had just begun.
